Synopsis:

Following on from Dr Rollo’s Mega Projects presentation in 2021, this follow up presentation will look at specific case study examples where the project manager successfully applied the principles suggested to achieve success in mega project management and examples where the project manager applied a more traditional approach which resulted in much poorer outcomes.

Dr Mike Rollo BE(Civil) MBA(ULdn) PhD(USyd) FAICD FIEAust

Mike has operated at CEO and Executive Manager levels with some of the world’s largest infrastructure development companies.

In 2012 Mike rejoined Leighton Holdings as Chief Risk Officer with specific accountability to oversee the risk management activities across the Leighton Group. During this time Leighton had annual revenues of A$24B, operated in 23 countries with 60,000 employees, had 400 active projects and submitted over 100 tenders each month.

In March 2017 Mike stepped down from his CRO role to pursue a PhD in project management at the University of Sydney which he completed in December 2020. Mike’s research studied the project management of mega infrastructure projects assessing factors that enabled these projects to successfully achieve their objectives. Through testing academic theories against actual practice, he was able to identify 13 specific factors that, when effectively implemented, led to project success. Since completing his PhD, Mike has been presenting his research findings to many audiences around the world.

In March 2021 Mike was appointed as an Honorary Professor to The Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management at University College, London and as a Research Affiliate to the School of Project Management at the University of Sydney.

Mike is a Director of WatermanBurns Associates Pty Ltd where he continues his research and provides executive coaching and mentoring services to industry leaders
